xPhoenix is a project of mine. Once it is complete to at least a usable degree I will publish it as open-source. So what is the deal?
I’ll keep it short here, because I intend to build a complete website around that thing.
In short terms, xPhoenix will build a workstation for you. One with all bells and whistles. It will do so, based on Kubuntu or macOS. If you ever lose your workstation-machine or simply need another one, xPhoenix will do this for you with a few commands into a freshly installed base-system.
The goal is, to be able to (re-)install a machine within one hour and have all signals to “go”:
- SSH keys in place
- Tools like vagrant, VirtualBox, etc. in place
- your sources in place
- a profesional and last not least beautiful GUI configuration in place
- and finally … your customisations in place
The whole thing is based on shell-scripts and Ansible-playbooks. Ansible is re-entrant, so the script might also be used to do - in a limited fashion - repairs.
So … once you switched to xPhoenix:
- having your notebook stolen from you is just annoying, but does not stop you from working
- having your notebook fried, costs you 2 hours and a notebook from the shelf or the next job, but it will definitely cost you a milestone or deadline or presentation
