Tools for Windows

Windows is not exactly what I would call an OS. Nevertheless with some love it can be tuned into something usable.

Caffeine

Caffeine Logo

Caffeine is available not only for Linux. I use alike software on Windows and macOS as well. Again it is listet here, because the Windows-version is nicely available as PortableApp.

Xmind

Xmind in general is not solely a Windows-Tool. It is available on several other platforms. I list it here, because it nicely integrates with the PortableApps-stack.

Xmind is a good solution for Mind-Mapping. The free version usually suffices for me. Anyway, your mileage may vary. If you are more into project-management, the pro-features might be interesting to you.

Kitty

Kitty (available in PortableApps) is a putty-fork, that adds a few nifty little features. I like it because of the start-button and especially as it can save profiles not just in the registry but also a flat files.

MobaXterm

I got hands on this tool … almost too late. In short words: marvellous, ingenious, gigantic. You work with servers from a Windows Desktop? Do not go without this! SSH, X11, Browser, Session management, Key handling all inside plus tons of others like RDP (yuck!). The flexibility of this tools is breath-taking. For smaller environments you may be fine with the free version, but it can only store a certain number of server-records.

PortableApps

More often than not, I am obliged to use a customer’s client setup. Usually, because of network access in the customer’s work environments (VPN, or alike).

In such cases, I noticed the inherent lack of proper tools to work. Either you do not get what you need or it takes ages or the tools comes in an incomplete, outdated, castrated fashion.

There is a way to make yourself independant of such environmental limitations: PortableApps.
